Women's Health

Balanced hormones are one of the essential ingredients in the life of a healthy woman. Hormones reflect many of the changes that occur throughout a woman’s life – from menarche to menopause.

When hormones are out of balance, reproductive symptoms and disorders can result that bring pain and suffering. PMS, period pain, endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome & infertility are some of the common issues women face during their menstruating years.

A holistic approach can help to uncover the underlying causes of the dysfunction and identify the best treatments.  Herbal medicine and diet and lifestyle change offer great benefits over pharmaceutical drugs. Many women get prescribed the oral contraceptive pill for period pain or irregular periods – but it does nothing to address the real cause of the dysfunction and really just masks the symptoms.

Karen has many years of experience in treating most hormonal issues and has great results using herbal medicine, nutritional supplements along with diet and lifestyle strategies. The monthly menstrual cycle is a natural part of a woman’s life and should be supported and balanced with a natural approach.  Karen loves to teach women about their bodies and their menstrual cycles and how to understand, respect and work with their natural rhythms.

Along with addressing lifestyle and environmental factors, I have found herbal and nutritional medicines to be invaluable tools in enhancing and optimising reproductive function.  I have had great success over the years in helping women alleviate period problems, menopausal complaints or achieve a healthy and successful pregnancy and birth. When a woman has healthy hormones – her life is more balanced and happy!   I look forward to supporting you to achieve optimal reproductive health -  Karen

I began seeing Karen in 2003 at Ruth Trickey’s clinic, Melbourne Holistic Health Group.  I was interested in doing preconception care and getting treatment for my PCOS so that I could achieve a healthy pregnancy.  Karen was very sensitive to my needs and very quickly identified and treated other health concerns which I didn’t even know I had.  The eating plan and supplements also helped my PCOS and with the help of herbs I was able to regulate my menstrual cycle and achieve a very normal and healthy pregnancy.  Karen taught me about natural fertility and how to know when I am at my most fertile, so it only took 4 menstrual cycles to get pregnant and I actually knew the exact day that I fell pregnant!    read more

Preconception and Fertility

Research has shown that the health of prospective parents before conception can influence the health of the egg, sperm and resultant embryo. By addressing diet and nutrition and changing lifestyle habits we can optimize our fertility and improve our chances of conception and a successful pregnancy.

Herbal medicine offers effective treatment for a range of reproductive disorders, such as endometriosis and PCOS, which can reduce fertility.  In many cases, male fertility issues can also be improved with lifestyle and dietary changes and supplement programs.

Karen has a great deal of experience working with natural fertility and infertility – including offering IVF support.  Karen works alongside IVF specialists and doctors where necessary to provide expert holistic care and a collaborative approach for every woman.

Karen also offers Fertility Wellness Programs to really transform your health on all levels and achieve your dream of a successful and health pregnancy and natural birth.  Take a look here for more information.

I highly recommend Karen to anyone who is going through the whole 'roller coaster' journey of IVF.  After years of trying for a baby naturally, and nothing happening, my partner and I decided to take some action.  Both being in our 20's we didn't assume we would have any trouble in conceiving. Long story short we ended up going through 4years of IVF, after going through two different gynecologists,( I had a very high reading with my FSH which was heading towards an early menopause)  I was willing to give anything a go to receive my dream of becoming a mum this is when I came across Karen. It was so lovely to actually have someone that actually listened to me. Karen put me on a super tonic which I call her 'magic potion' and after a few weeks in taking this my FSH levels dropped dramatically and this was my lucky month. I finally saw those two bright pink lines on a pregnancy test and realised my dream had finally came true. Read more...

After having our first baby at 40 years of age I we were keen to have a second baby quickly. After two miscarriages which happened early in both pregnancies a friend from my local play group suggested that I see Karen. After a few months of treatment we tried again and two cycles later I was pregnant again. I continued to see Karen and enjoyed a healthy pregnancy and straight forward delivery. We now have a daughter and son. Our daughter has also visited Karen for help with her asthma.  I have recommended Karen to others, some have visited her and experienced great results. At 41 years of age I felt that IVF was not an option for me so to have help in a non-invasive and inexpensive way suited us. We feel that our family is now complete. Also continuing with supplements helps me keep on top of doing everyday activities and breast feeding.

I have been treated by Karen for many years and she is a wonderful naturopath.  She has supported me through the pregnancy of my daughter and journey to motherhood. She helped support my body before conceiving to get it ready to have a baby, throughout the pregnancy and also postnatally.  She has given me a wealth of information, helped guide me through making informed decisions and provided me with emotional support.  I had difficulty breastfeeding and Karen was able to encourage the flow of my breastmilk and was a key resource in helping my daughter and I have a wonderful breastfeeding journey.  Thank you Karen for all your support, no doubt you will continue to support my health and my family’s for many years to come.

Menopause & Peri-menopause

The word menopause is often used in reference to that period of time in a woman’s life which is marked by hormonal changes.  In fact the years leading up to the menopause are more accurately coined the peri-menopause.

This transitional time is often marked by changes in menstrual cycle, both in length and blood flow, as well as a host of other hormone related symptoms.  These may include hot flushes, vaginal dryness, mood change and memory loss.

Many things will influence a woman’s experience of the peri-menopause and beyond.  Diet and lifestyle, including exercise and stress levels, can play an important part in this phase.

Karen views the menopause as a natural transition and seeks to support women through this period – by providing emotional support, symptom relief and preventative health care advice.  Herbal medicine offers safe and effective options for balancing women’s hormones and making the transition smoother and more enjoyable.

Hormone replacement therapy implies that menopause is a deficiency syndrome rather than a natural process.  For most women, HRT is not necessary for a healthy menopause experience, and its use should be carefully considered as it is not without inherent risks.

At age 46, after laparoscopic surgery to remove an ovarian cyst, I awoke to the news “your insides are a mess, riddled with endometriosis & scar tissue”.  A full hysterectomy was recommended!  Not sure I was ready to part with those “bits” & terrified of the severity of instant menopause, I knew I needed to find a good naturopath.  I found Karen actually through her website & was drawn by her special interest in women’s health.  I’ve never looked back & remain delighted with my choice to work with Karen.  Using herbal medicine, nutritional advise & professional nutritional supplements, Karen helped me turn my health around.  I’m now aged 50 & enjoying my best health ever. My endometriosis is successfully managed & with all my “bits” intact I can look forward to a normal & hopefully easy menopause.  Thanks Karen!   Read more...

To me Karen is an absolute angel! I highly recommend Karen to anyone who is going through the whole ‘roller coaster’ journey of IVF. It was so lovely to actually have someone that actually listened to me, it was in 2010 when we decided we would give IVF one last go before having a break. Karen put me on a super tonic which I call her ‘magic potion’ and after a few weeks in taking this my FSH levels dropped dramatically and this was my lucky month and my dream had finally came true. I always feel so positive every time I leave Karen’s rooms, I’m so glad that I found her I can never thank her enough for my positive out come!
